Congratulations on the arrival of your newest family member. Did you know you can save approximately $2,000.00/year in formula cost alone. Breastfed babies have fewer ear infections, this means less doctors visits, less time taken off from work.
How can you help?
1. Show your support by attending a Pre-natal breastfeeding class with her.
2. When she feels overwhelmed and not confident in her skills, respectfully listen to her vent, tell her how proud you are of her, and that she can do this. Saying “You can always quit” is NOT an option. You can also protect her from any negative comments from others about breastfeeding. Your support is essential in successful breastfeeding.
3. Have her favorite nutritious snacks and water available when she is nursing. Mom’s body is working hard to make milk, this should be the Only thing she should focus on.
4. Spend time with your baby. Holding your baby skin to skin, (this can be done while watching the game), wearing your baby, changing your baby’s diaper all establishes trust and bonding between you and your child. This also shows mom she is not in this alone.
5. Limit visitors, I know everyone wants to see the baby, but let’s get breastfeeding established first. If family wants to help, have them cook meals and assist with some
chores.
6. Ask for help, Lactation Consultants are your go-to person when breastfeeding issues arise. Give me a call, I am here to help.
